In CQO23 v Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs [2025] FCA 97 Needham J considers finding by Judge Vasta that it was “objectively rather unusual” to celebrate a child’s birth later in the evening.

This article examines the phenomenon of automated information about the law—specifically, the growing tendency for governments to use automated systems to provide information about complex legislative schemes to the public. Our study shows that a plethora of such systems now exist in Australia and the United Kingdom, yet they remain largely unstudied by public law scholars in these jurisdictions. We argue that these systems demand our attention, and to be designed with a similar level of care and scrutiny to those that execute the law—particularly given users are likely to rely upon the information that they generate.
